Q. What are dental veneers?
A. A dental veneer is a very thin layer of porcelain fitted on the front surface of a tooth. Dental veneers can be used to:

• Repair broken or chipped teeth

• Improve the colour of discoloured teeth

• Change the shape and position of teeth - we can even use veneers to close small gaps, if braces are not suitable, or to straighten out teeth that are slightly out of position to bring them into line with the other teeth.

Q. How many dentist appointments will I need?
A. A dental veneer is similar to a crown, so two visits to the practice are required.

1. On your first visit we prepare the tooth, take a series of impressions, along with a recording of how your teeth bite together. We then use a detailed shade guide to match the surrounding teeth so that the final veneer will look completely natural.

It normally takes 1-2 weeks for your veneer to be designed and made. As the preparation of the veneer is so slight and hardly noticeable, a temporary veneer/filling is not required, so the tooth looks much the same as it did before.

1. On the second visit, our dentist will show you the final veneer before bonding it into place, to make sure you are happy with the final fit and appearance.

Q. What else should I expect when I have dental veneers?
A. Because the layer of porcelain is so thin, veneers make teeth look natural and healthy again. Only a minimal amount of enamel is removed to prepare the front surface of the tooth and the thickness of the enamel removed is the final thickness of the veneer, so the tooth will remain the same size.

Within a couple of days you should be less aware of your new veneer and it should feel like a normal tooth. Due to the fragile porcelain only minor adjustments can be made after the veneer is fitted, so we recommend you give the veneer a few days to settle in before we attempt any changes that may be needed.

You new dental veneer will be checked and polished so you are absolutely happy with the finished result.
